It was a long, awful night of staring at that cursed ceiling mural as the moonlight crept across the wall and finally faded into the sinister gray of a sleepless dawn. I shouldn’t even have tried to sleep, but my body ached with bone-deep weariness. Terrible thoughts chased each other around my head as I lay there in the dark, trying to somehow patch myself together enough that I could get out of bed in the morning and do what needed to be done.

Mostly my stunned mind kept presenting me with the central awful fact, over and over: I was the Demon of Disaster.

I didn’t feel like a demon. I felt human.

But then, I supposed I didn’t know what being human felt like.

This doesn’t change anything wasn’t a comforting thought. It recast my whole life in a darker light. All of the hopes I’d been building that my jess would let me live a normal life, that I could stop being a danger to the people around me at last, were shattered.

My secret weighed unspoken in my chest like blood pooling in my lungs. I was going to have to tell the Rookery sooner or later; this was the sort of information that might get people killed if I held it back too long. But every time I tried to imagine telling them, a wave of nausea gripped me, and cold sweat prickled my skin.

Bastian. I could tell Bastian. He’d understand; he wasn’t entirely human himself, and he’d believed my grandmother wasn’t irredeemable. Maybe telling him would be enough, for now.

Morning broke fully over me with all the pale unpleasantness of used dishwater. It was time to make my bones move, to face the world that I only half belonged to. Time to go forth into the awful newborn day and keep it from becoming worse.

Dragging against the weight of my own shattered world, I got up.
